First Impressions 「Sengoku Rance」

He´s great in a fight and in bed, he loves women over everything and he has his own way of thinking.
Enter Rance, the most disturbing and humerous hero I´ve ever meet so far in my gaming life.
Story
We have been thrusted into feoudal Japan where the country is at war. In one of these regions, Owari Oda Nobunaga has asked a foreigner, Rance and Sill Plain for help defending his territories. He doesn´t want to expand but just rather keep it safe and not lose that many soldiers.
Being the hero of Justice(self-proclaimed) Rance eagerly agrees to helping Nobunaga, in exchange for getting to have some fun in bed with the princesses of the areas that he conquers.
And thus the game beings. How will you play as Rance? Will you be overly aggressive and conquer with bloodlust or will you try and keep it safe?
Gameplay
What can I say, it´s fun to play since you can rise your national powerlevel, try to improve your relations with the people under you(or trying to get the female commanders in bed).
At first you are greated with a world map with all areas around you and the one under your controll are areas where you can do things in. Depending on the situation there are scenarios that you can follow that open up secret paths or progress the story in a good direction. Or if you make the wrong choice it could lead to a bad end or game over.
It is pretty hard to describe, but lets just say that there are a multitude of stuff to do and it costs one action fan, at the beginning you have two, after you´ve used up your action fans the “turn” will end. Then it´s the other areas turn to decide on what to do.
Increasing your troops don´t cost a action fan unless you recruit someone into your army. Replenishing health also is free from action fan cost by paying money to replenish the troops health.
Otherwise just about anything cost a actionfan.
Battles
Much revolves around battles in Sengoku Rance, which is understandable since it is a strategy game. Each commander has a certain job, Rance for example is a warrior, high on offensive capabilities but a bit lacking in defence, to make up for this Sill, his slave girl keeps close to him to heal him.
You only have a set amount of action squares. A attack costs one square while special moves usually cost all your squares.
There are a number of different types of units, soldiers, ninjas, mikos, archers, monks and I don´t even know them all. They all have a set range, letting a warrior stand in the back line will not work since s/he can´t attack then.
Adult deluxe
Yes, there are erotic images in this game as well. Espacially since Rance is set on having sex with all beautifull woman in Japan. He can´t have any children tough thanks to a spell that Sill cast on him.
He calls his lower part the “hyper weapon” and from the laughs I´ve had while reading it´s big. Really really big. And he can go from normal to different grades of erect at will. And he loves to tease women with it.
So as I said, he is pretty galant, but he is also disturbing as hell since he will not listen. Even though deep down it seems as if he cares for the women that he indeed has sex with.
Characters
Lots of beautiful woman. They are plentifull and beautifull. I do understand why Rance wants them for himself. For being such a old game it sure has it´s great woman. Some are general soldiers but the ones that are related to the story(like princesses) are well detailed and well made. Just great.
Summary
A fun game. Really fun. Items to increase your strength/affection and so on. Just great, lots of stuff to do and decide on. It all pays out and it is well worth taking time to play aggressively. Even though it might be a bit hard and you will restart the scenes a lot.
If you don´t care about who you capture or how the females are treated then just play the way you want. There is a multitude of options to do.
Great replay value as things can go and end a bit like they want.
In short, a great game that I recommend people to get.

Thanks for indirectly telling me Sengoku Rance is in English. I knew manga wouldn’t be able to read Japanese, but maybe Avisch would.
No worries :p
Tears to Tiara and Sengoku Rance both have patches for translating them into English.
I just don´t write it out. I should now when I think about it.
[...] problem is this: http://otoboku.se/2009/10/27/first-impressions-%EF%BD%A2sengoku-rance%EF%BD%A3/ that for a database error has a bad value that appears over the whole blog. Still the post works. [...]
Damn you, manga! I’ve been dying to play this (and finish Cross Channel and KiraKira) for a while now, and other stuff just keeps getting in the way.
It’s interesting that you can choose to play the game in completely different ways. Does your playing style open up different scenarios / women entirely or is it mostly the same with slight alterations to the main course of events?
Taking to long to get Kenshin will make her get raped and never be recruitable.
Not capturing certain generals will make them join other forces to once again stand against you.
There is a main story that will make certain turns their own. But except from that you are free to do what you want
And deciding when to use Rance´s satisfaction bonus or just about anything is all up to you as the player.
It´s fun to play. Irritating to see that you kill the enemy generals you want to capture and so on.
But for a game like this it´s wonderful.
