If HP Lovecraft was asian, wrote erotic novels and lived during the 90′s, this just might have been the result.

I like most of HP Lovecraft’s works. Sure, some of his stuff’s silly and even daft, but he’s created an awesome mythos and has become one of the most famed and noted horror writers of all time. OF ALL TIME!!!! (I know, I know. It’s not funny anymore.) Well, I’ve always tried to watch every movie, play every game, try everything that’s got the slightest link to his work.

And when I found out that there’s an hentain loosely based on his writings, well… Needless to say, I was surprised. But that’s nothing against how surprised I was when I found out that people actually said it’s awesome story-wise! Since I’m trying, to some degree at least, to write about the weirder, or more hard-to-get-to stuff here, I felt that I needed write about this one.

I was kind of afraid though. Let me explain. Ever read something by Lovecraft? If not, let me explain what most of his deities have in common. Tentacles. Lots and lots of tentacles. And we all know about japanese and tentacles, right? I mean, sure, tentacles can be awesome. But when I’m watching a scary/gory horror flick I’m not in the mood for some hardcore tentacle action.

So judge by my surprise when I found out that there was almost no hentai at all, and those parts were pretty innocent. To be fair, it was completely unnecessary too and didn’t add anything at all to the show. It wasn’t that gory either. Or scary. And it had one of the lamest fights since Nemesis decided that he was the good guy in the Resident Evil 2-movie. But the story was pretty nice, with a lot of Lovecraft-references.

Anyway, it’s a pretty conventional anime. The main character is a detective, surrounded by a lot of women, he’s been through something terrible but can’t remember because of amnesia and the story unfolds through new discoveries and flashbacks. The Necronomicon is an evil book, written by The Mad Arab, and it contains all the evil spells and magic of this world. And some other epic shit too. The character-design is pretty stupid and bad (especially when they start portraying americans, hahaha. Talk about prejudices), music is really great, voice-acting is okay, animations are acceptable.

Anyway, all in all it’s just okay, since it ain’t that well drawn, the story lacks at a couple of points (I won’t spoil it for you, but there are some places where the characters are incredibly stupid and some where the story development isn’t explained thouroughly and some parts are completely forgotten). The overall aesthetics aren’t that good either. But still worth a watch if you’re a die-hard Lovecraft fan.

It’s pretty obvious that it’s created by a studio without the budget to create a “real” anime show, which made them resort to hentai.

Anyway, I don’t regret watching it.

On a completely unrelated note; check out this Swedish broadband commercial. It’s hillarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RuqSuqx19w
