So, this has to be the weirdest thing I´ve encountered in a long long time. I knew that this existed and I wanted to watch it so I turned into a happy puppy when I finally got my hands on this “movie”.

Almost everyone knows the Super Mario brothers, famous from videogames and TV-shows. They are also known as one of the worst real life adaptions of a videogame ever.

How does the whole movie thing work out in anime form? That´s what we are going to find out.

Story

One late night Mario was busy playing videogames. He had been playing for the whole day and wanted to finish the game. To add insult to his tired mind the screen suddenly changed and instead of the boy Mario had been playing as it was now a girl. A girl wearing a pink dress and being chased by monsters and bullets.

If you are not surprised by that, then I hope that everyone would be surprised when the said girl jumps straight out from the TV and into your arms, with all the koopas, goombas, bullet bills following shortly after.

Given a cute princess is lying on your floor. You´d most riskely fall for her.

Then enters the big bad Bowser Koopa, also appearing from the TV. Smashes Mario into the ground and takes the princess with him.

Sulking Mario thinks it has all been a dream, except for the stone that the princess dropped…

The next day Luigi tells Mario that the stone is in fact a rare gem from the Mushroom Kingdom. All of a sudden a mysterious dog arrives, grabs the gem and takes of. Mario and Luigi follow suit.

manga´s thoughts: In every sense a classic anime story. Girl gets kidnapped straight in front of the main hero, hero decides to rescue her. What´s weird is the take that the usual Mario items get. Here they are legendary items that are needed to defeat Bowser. And Bowser´s goal with the kidnapping? To marry Princess Peach…

Animation

As one can see from the image cap above the quality that I watched this in is very low. The subs are also awful and they miss a lot of the translation. But that wasn´t important here. The animation sometimes takes a big step and above all Peach and Bowser are quite well animated, while Mario & Luigi are not so well animated. It´s a old movie, which shows. But man they did make Peach a really cutie here!!

manga´s thoughts: Peach is hot. Give her this design in a coming Mario game and people will buy it without a second thought instead of how badly 3d animated she has turned now

Music

Retro classic music with a twist, different version of the classical beats do sound good. But could have been better with less singing and more instrumental music

manga´s thoughts: I love the SMB theme, and I can listen to it for a long time. Here we get the most sounds and sound effects from the Mario game. Which takes it´s toll as they are not all synced together with the animation. But it´s quite fun to see them pound their head into solid blocks to aquire gold and/or items.

Characters

In the recent Mario games that I have played, Luigi has been a crybaby with no courage and he has had to lean on Mario for support. Here he is a greedy son of a bitch.

Other than that, it´s classic Mario characters with a personality. Lakitu having to first throw the spineys, then water them, give them sunlight and that he takes care of the piraya plants are just hilarious.

manga´s thoughts: I don´t like Luigi as a crybaby, but I like him even less as a money hungry idiot who will do anything for money. He doesn´t think twice about rescuing Princess Peach, all he has in his mind is grabbing as much money, gold and gems as he possibly can.

Final thoughts

A quite interesting watch actually. You´re not used to seeing the characters like this or behave like they do here. So all in all it was enjoyable to watch Peach, she could have been nicer to Bowser and Mario though.

The ending is classic, but that I won´t spoil. But you can probably see it a mile away. I will tell you that it isn´t the normal Super Mario Ending though :p
