Makai Kingdom
Prepare to meet the most badass Overlord in the cosmos, Lord Zetta and he is on a mission, to find the sacred tome to stop his Netherworld from being destroyed.
On his way he encounters Raiden, a mysterious enemy which is out to kill him by orders of his master. Zetta, being the most badass Overlord in the cosmos easily overpowers Raiden and finds the sacred tome, but after reading it “Zetta is stupid” he burns it, which destroys his Netherworld and almost Zetta himself, the only way for him to save himself is to confine his soul to the sacred tome.
When he awakens afterwards, well then he is in a much smaller and more helpless form than before, still being a badass Overlord but in the form of a book…
In comes Pram the Oracle, she warned him his netherworld would be destroyed, but Zetta wouldn´t listen. So in order to get his body back he has to start from page one, sorry scratch. As Zetta now is the sacred tome every wish that is written on him will be granted.
Thus every other Overlord wishes for Netherworlds which Zetta can conquer and in time he will be back to being the most freaking badass Overlord in the Cosmos.
If you´ve played any other NIS game then you know there is a lot of humour in their games, in Makai Kingdom it feels like they have gone haywire and really tried to make you laugh every time there is a sequence of text. There are a lot of books jokes, like Alex, Zettas rival who wonders what the bookwork is going to do? Give him a papercut?
And much more.
The one big difference from other NIS games are the way battles are fought, it resembles Phantom Brave with it´s circular movement and how you attack, but there the resembling points stop. You can easily move forth and back, the turn is ended when you want and the battles isn´t turn-based where the character with the highest speed acts first.
With weapons like a morning star with you´re able to throw people of the field or a katana to make some serious damage but at the same time lowering your defense all weapons have pros and cons.
The characters are a variety of wellknown(archers, soldiers) to some rare for Makai Kingdom(Hell kitties, corn).
How you make characters is the biggest new addition to the NIS universe, in here you have to follow some steps to create a character
- Have enough mana
- Have a item from which you´re about to create the character
- Select the class of the character
- Name the character
- Add the bonus points
- Finished
Selecting a rock(with high defense and low int) for a mage isn´t a good idea, rocks should be used for warriors that need to have high def since all items have a certain procentage in which the status are enhanced/lowered, all depending on the class/item you want to use.
My favorite class sofar must be the Hell Kitty, a little kid dressed in a cat suit with hellish move and strength. In second place comes the female swordmaster, cute, deadly and she can really kick some ass, her only weakpoint is her low HP/Def.
In terms of grading this game, the total score will be 9/10, a single step below Disgaea/Disgaea 2 since the game is to short, only 9 chapters and I hate the free dungeon system. Graphic style is as usual 2d, nice animations and all. Music being the thing the game falls short of.
Controlls are divine, if there is something that doesn´t go your way, you only have yourself to blame.
Result: Buy this game, love it, play it and the standard quote for NIS games: How Long do you last?
